Reserves run out winners in Hereford

Worcester City Reserves' second league game of the season on Saturday proved to be a positive and clinical performance against a very tough, physical and experienced Ro-Stars, playing their first league game on the 4G pitch at Herefordshire County F.A Ground.

After a lackluster first game last week, the management team challenged the lads to step it up, and they did not disappoint. 4 U18's fresh from F.A Youth Cup duties were added to the squad for this Game.

The game started tight and cagey with City growing into the game steadily. Neat play and 1-on1s going the way of the Blue And Whites, but without making it count. The Ro-Stars keeper was in fine form, denying City with good saves throughout the opening stages. The hosts grew in confidence as the half progressed, but their only significant chance of the half called Shane Williams in the City goal into action to save well on 40 minutes. On the stroke of half time, City almost took the lead through Sam Judge, but the Ro-Stars keeper pulled off a fine save to deny and keep the scores level at the break.

City were forced into a change at the break, with Sam Judge replaced through injury, forcing a new dynamic in midfield. 10 minutes into the half, Kai Holbrook whipped in an inviting ball and Joe Bates was there to meet, powering a header home.

5 minutes later, it was Holbrook himself who turned finisher. Good work from James Taylor found Holbrook on the edge of the area, who made no mistake, doubling the City lead.

City thought they had extended their lead and put the game out of sight just moments later. Bates was bundled over in the box. Ethan Turner stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way. The spot kick was mistakenly ruled out for encroachment, which the referee awarded a free kick for instead, a mistake which they apologised for following the game.

The City flow was uninterrupted and it was just a couple of minutes later that they had their third. Joe Bates skipped his way around 2 defenders before powefully slotting home from 10 yards.

Bates then wrapped up his hat-trick on 75 minutes, with a fine strike from a 25-yard free kick.

A good day at the office for City, with the defence keeping a clean sheet and the strike force putting four goals on the board. Will Holland and 16-year-old Kyle Clayton ran the midfield, with the management team fielding 3 more 17-year-olds.

The Reserves take on Westfields Reserves this coming Saturday at Claines Lane. Kick Off is 2:30pm.
