Introduction to football for 5-7 Year Olds

Worcester City hopes to kick-off the footballing journey of its future players with the launch of its own development centre this weekend.

The initiative will provide a fun and structured introduction to the game for boys and girls aged five to seven-years-old and potentially identify future players for the Club's youth sides. Indeed it will be the very beginning of a pathway that could lead through the age groups to both Worcester City men's and women's first teams.

Running the weekly sessions will be well-known local coach Matt Tally. He has been heavily involved in local grassroots football for almost 10 years and currently runs junior sessions twice a week under the Matt Tally Football Academy banner in addition to his duties as lead coach for Aston Villa RTC Girls Under 9s to Under 11s and his participation with the Football Development Centre at Sixways on Friday evenings.

"I've been asked countless times by parents if I know anywhere for their really little ones to start playing football," said Matt.

"When Kev Brookes, City's Head of Youth Development, spoke about the Club's aspirations to set up its own development centre, it seemed an ideal opportunity to be involved and I'm genuinely excited. Having teased it on social media, I know there is already interest out there and I think it could really take off once the connection with Worcester City gets known."

The sessions will take place every Sunday between 9am and 10am on one of the grass pitches at Perdiswell Leisure Centre. Places are available by booking in advance only.

"All the drills will be fun-based and it's about giving the children the first stage in their football development but getting them onside from the very beginning," added Matt. "Let them have fun and love the ball but learn the discipline and gain the confidence to go and play for a team, which is hopefully then Worcester City."

Commenting on the launch of the Worcester City Development Centre, Chairman of the Club's youth section, Dave Francis, said: "This is an initiative that we've talked about and wanted for some time so we're delighted to get it up and running and with such a well-respected coach as Matt at the helm.

"Of course, we hope the Centre will generate future players for our teams going forward but just as important is that it creates enjoyment and lots of happy memories for children about their first taste of football."

Attendance costs would be £5 for the first session and then £20 per month thereafter.
