City in great form find another victory

Worcester City U18s welcomed Lye Town to Castle Claines (one up from fortress, right) for their second Midland Floodlight Youth League match against our friends Lye Town. The evening was autumnal with rain threatening at any moment.

The ref started proceedings and, from the first, City looked to impose their game on the visitors. Crisp passing at the back moved the ball from side to side distributing into the channels where we pressed hard and fast. A shout goes out to Alex Watts who lead the line and held the ball really well, playing Owen, Tris and Kane in. The hosts pressure finally told when Alex laid off to Owen Oxley and, in keeping with his current form, Owen rounded the defenders and put the ball calmly in the net 1-0. Credit to Town, they never gave up on the half. They pressed and worked hard, but City had all the answers. The half ended 1-0.

The second half started with the visitors finding renewed energy. They worked hard in midfield to close down the ball and looked to send their striker into key areas.Gradually City began to grab more possession, their quick passing game started to tell on the opposition. There were a number of opportunities just as there were in the first half for the hosts, but eventually, when the ball fell to Tristan Webby in the box, he spun and elegantly planted it into the corner of the goal 2-0. With their backs to the wall, Lye Town threw everything they had at the Worcester, and were rewarded with a free kick that was headed into the City net 5 minutes before time. With the tension ratcheted up, the hosts calmed the game down and played out for a 2-1 win.

This was a night to celebrate player development. The City team was made up of 15 to 18 year olds performing at the highest level. Three points putting City U18s at the top of the MFYL: Southern Premier Division.

A big thank you to Lye Town, our friends in football, for coming down and we wish them all the best for the rest of the season.
