Battling cup action sees City U18s progress to the next round

Worcester City U18s vs Lichfield City U18s - FA Youth Cup - Monday 7th Sept - Photos to follow

Under the floodlights at Claines Lane, last Monday, the FA Youth Cup came to Worcester. Our U18s took on Lichfield City U18s, kick off 7.45pm, in what was to be an end to end match with opportunities for both sides.

For any City fan, this was a moment to savour in so many ways. Here was a Worcester youth team playing on home soil in Worcester on the superb new 4G playing surface. Whilst Claines is still under development, the club house and offices a shell (though the changing room toilets work!), we are playing in Worcester in the FA Cup once again. Warmly welcomed and hosted by Worcestershire FA, City’s blue and white stripes were resplendent under the brand new floodlights. Not only that, it was a moment for the Worcester City Youth Development section of the club. The team comprising players aged 15 to 18, demonstrating the pathway right the way from the U8s through to the U18s and into the Reserves. This was all about one club and the future for Worcester City.

The final score line was a resounding 4-1 to City, but the score hides how even the match was. From kick off Lichfield took advantage of City’s high line by putting the ball over our defence and running onto it. A number of times our sweeper-keeper Ben Clay, sprinted out like Linford Christie to clear the ball to safety. But as the game settled down, Worcester began to dominate possession. So it was a surprise when, against the run of play, the visitors found themselves in a 1 on 1 with our goalie and went ahead with a clean strike. 0-1. Just before half time, Worcester surged back with a well worked goal from Owen Oxley, which was as timely as it was easy on the eye, 1-1. The second half started at a frantic pace, both sides on the offensive, but Worcester gradually got control and were rewarded when Tom Griffin headed the ball with force into the net for 2-1. Not long after Jack Fisher curled the ball in to make it 3-1, giving the visitors an up hill struggle. But the goal of the night, sealed it. Alex Watts received the ball in the area with his back to goal, spun and slotted it into the corner past the diving Lichfield keeper. 4-1

That was how it finished. Huge respect is due to Lichfield who were very good opposition and a prospect for the future. But City earned their next round match against Stratford Town FC coming back from being 1-0 down and setting the evening alight with some electrifying goals. Player development and a return to Worcester, central to what Monday night in the FA Youth Cup was all about.
