Close encounter decided with own goal

City u12's travelled to Stourbridge in the JPL for what was yet another close game between the two sides.

Q1
Like the previous two encounters this season this game proved to be a tight affair. With frost still covering the majority of the pitch at the start both sides got the ball down and played some good football. Stourbridge were looking dangerous on the break and had the first chance when their lively left winger had effort from just outside the box go wide. The majority of the first quarter saw both midfields battle for supremacy but it turned into a scrappy affair with little space. With both defences looking strong and the final balls lacking from both teams, chances were few and far between. City's only clear chance fell to Ashton Doyle who was put in by a neat Kyle Clayton pass but his effort was well saved by the home keeper.

Q2
The second quarter saw little change. Stourbridge were quick in transition and looked to hit the city on the break but the visitors defence of Joe Layland, Hayden Russell and Jay Bennet coped with the threat. The home sides first effort on target came from a long range free kick but Zac Watkins in the city goal saved comfortable. City almost took the lead from a similar position when Jay Bennet struck a fierce free kick from long range which had the beating of the home keeper but not the cross bar. Clayton linked well with Jake Brookes before firing a shot goal bound only to see his effort again well saved by the home keeper.

Q3
With the game still in deadlock Stourbridge started the third quarter strongly and a good move found their striker in on goal but Zac Watkins was quick off his line to block the effort. From the resulting corner the home side took advantage of their superior height with a fine header but it was superbly blocked on the line by Doyle and the rebound shot saved by Watkins. Clayton had another shot from range which was just off target as the quarter ended goalless

Q4
With the game to be won city pushed Doyle up top with Rafe Green and at last the visitors started to press the home defence who continued to play out from the back forcing some errors and missed passes. Henry Guy won the ball from a quick press and played in Doyle who in turn showed quick feet to put a well timed pass into the advancing Clayton who rounded the defender but couldn't wrap his foot around the ball enough as his curling effort beat the keeper and the far post. Stourbridge continued to play some attractive football from the back but once in the City third any danger was easily dealt with by the defence well marshalled by Josh Francis. As the game seemed to be heading for a deserved share of the points the visitors were left regretting missed chances when a fierce cross was deflected into his own goal by the unfortunate Francis. It was tough on the boys but a good game played in the right spirit by two footballing teams.
