WCFC back with a bang

The girls had their first pre-season game today against Kingfisher.

Despite moving the 11-a-side, the girls played 8v8 to gain vital match fitness and game time. Both sides started nervy with the girls looking to blow the cobwebs away. After the first 5 minutes, WCFC started to dictate the play by passing the ball around quickly, remembering to look up and pick out a player. In the middle of the park Indie was showing why she is a vital member of the team by not only attacking well, but also showing off her defensive skills. The first game came from debutant Ellie who had a shot from outside the area and managed to lob the keeper - a superb start for the new signing. Following this the girls continued to press and look for gaps in play. The second goal came from Birmo, who was working tirelessly on the wing, showing her pace and power to make it 2-0. Eva came off the bench to make it 3-0 with a typical Archetti-Lutz goal - all about determination. Millie, Meg and Thea looked solid at the back, with all 3 going on surging runs throughout the 1st half. The girls went into the break 3-0 to the good.
The second half saw Mia swap with Meg, meaning Mia went to centre back. Straight away she began to dictate the game by looking for through balls and her barking instructions to her teammates. Special mention for Belle who worked tirelessly upfront, making great runs, and never giving up. Birmo got her second of the game with a smart finish into the roof of the net.
With the girls gaining vital minutes, a quick change in formation saw Indie and Thea form a defensive duo, with Millie taking the lead upfront. Her hard work from last season was rewarded when she was 1-on-1 with the keeper and coolly slotted the ball home.
Throughout the game Kingfisher caused the girls problems by never allowing them time on the ball and were a huge credit to their coaches and parents. Well done to Kingfisher who fought well throughout. Finally, it was great to have a ref who not only supported the girls but talked to them during the game about how well they did or any things they need to think about.

Thank you, Kingfisher, for your hospitality today - and good luck for the season.

Next up - Nunnery Wood and the girl’s 1st 11-a-side match!
