Match report by Dave Francis

After some hard fought Cup matches, where we acquitted ourselves well in large parts, we were back against the side we played in our first ever JPL game, Bustleholme T2.

A lacklustre warm up was followed by a fairly abject showing in the first third. We were second to everything and there was only one team that wanted to win this game. The opposition were mounting waves of attack against a fairly fierce wind and we couldn’t find our tempo at all. We went behind with a scrappy goal where we had plenty of opportunities to clear.

At the end of the first third the coaches had some very frank words with the boys and it seemed to have paid off. Whilst attacking into a gale we suddenly looked as though we were up for it. Led by the effervescent Austin we were able to get a hold of the game and our passing game returned. One such attack played Caleb into the wide left area and he played a defence splitting through ball for Austin to hammer home. We were slowly putting our stamp on the game even though the injuries were mounting.

The previous two weeks we had capitulated in the final third. The boys had a frank conversation between themselves and resolved to go out and give it their all in the last third. We started on top and never really looked back. We were calm on the ball, chased everything and dominated throughout. A passage of play from our goal kick summed up everything we are striving to achieve. Ev M played a simple pass to Will, Will under pressure played it back to Ev, Ev took a touch and got his head up and played a simple pass back to Will under pressure. The movement and pulling their defence out of shape with 4 simple passes created an attacking opportunity.

We took the lead through a battling Tom making a goal out of nothing. Austin put the game beyond doubt with another fine finish and then put the game beyond any doubt following further excellent work from Tom.

One day we will play for all of the thirds and when we do the opposition beware!

Some notable performances today including the hard working Tom, the defensively sound Liam and the confident Will.

GOLD

Hard working, holding the ball up well, playing simple passes and a real handful throughout the game. The small matter of a hat-trick rounded an impressive display from Austin

SILVER

A constant threat on the left, some excellent link up play and some wicked crosses, well done Caleb.

BRONZE

We have been asking this lad to take his time and to take a touch, command his area and be brave in crosses for a number of weeks. Today Evan M showed the skills we have been asking of him and it was great to see.
