Match report by Dave Francis

Performances improving with results to come

The start of the season, transitioning from a really small pitch, the introduction of offsides and the move to 9-a-side has been a challenging one for the boys of WCFC, but there are real signs of improvement as demonstrated by a hard fought game against the table topping Kidderminster Harriers.

The game started at a frenetic pace with both sides intent of playing football. The slight change in tactics from WCFC working well to counteract their previous Achilles heel, the ball over the top. Slightly against the run of play, a defensive error allowed their excellent forward time and space to put them in front. WCFC responded brilliantly and applied the pressure and came close in the form of Ben fizzing one just past the post. WCFC were battling and harassing their opponents and the pressing work, done on the training ground by Ian Jennings, was really coming to the fore. The impressive Austin epitomising the work rate and tenacity on display.

As has happened on more than a few occasions this season, WCFC just weren’t getting the run of the green, and an own goal following, a smart save from Evan M extended the visitors lead.

The team talk at the break was simple; keep doing what they were doing but cut the errors from lack of concentration out! WCFC came flying out of the blocks and really took the game to their high flying visitors. However it was the visitors again who extended their lead as a rasping free kick cannoned off the bar with WCFC failing to react quick enough (something for the training ground) and a simple tap in made it three. To their absolute credit WCFC kept on battling and creating half chances to no avail.

The third quarter saw some glorious chances come and go for WCFC who were well on top throughout the period. WCFC could easily have (and perhaps should have) scored from three glorious chances to get back on level terms, but it was another defensive mistake and the following failure to clear the lines, that allowed the visitors to score again. However, once again, WCFC would not be deterred and to their credit they showed real grit and character to come back into the game once more. They got their deserved goal just before the end of the quarter from Dylan, who showed excellent technique to score on the volley.

The final quarter followed much of the same, with some really bright attacking moments from WCFC together with strong performances across the pitch. Another error led to a goal which gave the score line a flattering look as this was never a 5-1 game!

The WCFC boys continue to improve week on week. The defence today showed significant improvements and, together with a wider press from the team, made life really difficult for Kiddie. On a different day the score line could easily have been so very different, but the reality is that WCFC need to learn to play for the full 80 minutes and to cut out the individual errors.

There were so many valid contenders for awards this week it made it very difficult to choose:

GOLD
His best performance of the season so far, posing a far mode attacking threat, being a handle for defenders and linking play up well. Well done Austin.

SILVER
Equally his best performance of the season so far, with a really strong defensive performance against a very skilful and tricky winger. Well done Jack.

BRONZE
Calebs performances throughout the season so far have been of a very high quality, changing games and being a threat down the left. He is really excelling this season.
