A second half Liam Lockett brace saw City go through in the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup at Rugby Town.
City got off to a decent start with chances for Craig Jones with a header from a corner followed by Sean Brain firing inches wide of the post after a dazzling run.
The home side nearly took the lead from a free kick which went inches wide whilst at the other end an Aaron Birch over head volley was tipped over the bar by Rugby Keeper Sam Lomax.
On the stroke of half-time Rugby had another decent chance, this time from a corner which was headed over by Loyiso Recci
City were forced into a change on the hour mark when Jamie Smith pulled up to be replaced by Joe Hawkins, then a few minutes later Marco Adaggio replaced Sean Brain. Within a minute City took the lead. A well worked move down the right starting from a throw in on the half way line saw Aaron Birch spread wide to Liam Lockett who was in acres of space & he cut inside & made his finish look easy
City had further chances, the first from Marco Adaggio, who shot over from close range, under heavy pressure from a defender and then Aaron Birch just couldn't get on the end of a Dave Reynold's pass across the goal.
The second came in an almost identical move to the first goal with City taking a half-way line throw on the right. The ball eventually ended up with Lockett on the left and he drove forward before scoring with another fine finish.
City go through to meet Walsall Wood at home on Saturday 12th September
