City look to equal a 46 year record on Saturday afternoon when they host Slimbridge in the Hellenic League, 3pm kick off.
Chris Cornes' men are currently on an astonishing run off 11 consecutive league wins, a run that began with the Worcester Derby victory over Worcester Raiders in August. The all-time record is 12 consecutive league wins, which was set between March and April 1977. It will be a remarkable achievement for Cornes' side to match, or even break that record.
Our visitors on Saturday, Slimbridge, currently sit in 8th place in the Hellenic League Premier Division table, currently only two points off the play-off places. Their form has been rather up-and-down of late, and have only recorded one win in their last five league games, and last time out were beaten by our neighbours Worcester Raiders 4-2. They do have goals in their ranks, however, and striker Rudi McKinnon has notched three goals in their last four league games, and is currently on nine for the season in the league.
City have been very impressive of late, most recently demonstrated by the dominant 4-0 win over third-placed Royal Wootton Bassett Town last time out. They boast arguably the league's two most in-form players, Liam Lockett and Kyle Belmonte, who both scored twice each last time out and are on 19 and 15 goals respectively in all competitions this season.
Belmonte's second, a perfectly executed lob from the halfway line, will surely challenge for 'Goal of the Season', too.
It was also a welcome return of a clean sheet on Saturday, with Haydn Whitcombe again impressive between the sticks, pulling off a fantastic save in the first half which saw City maintain a two goal lead at the time. The four immediately in front, Stoddart, Layton, Keightley and skipper Mace, have formed a fantastic defensive unit which has conceded just 11 goals in 15 league games so far this campaign.
All across the pitch, Cornes' side have felt settled recently, particularly in league matches. The only real changes have been in who leads the line between Dylan Hart and Jamie Insall, with Hart also being deployed on the right recently, with Izak Reid and Elliott Hartley also being used in that spot. Much of the club's excellent form must be credited to Cornes' management and settling this team so quickly, with many of his squad having not played together before this season.
Last Saturday's 4-0 win was watched by 825 supporters at Claines Lane, an exceptional number, and all at the club hope for a similar number this weekend. Please note that the club plan to have a second bar in operation on Saturday afternoon to help with queues, which will be situated next to the club house.
