There’s no time for rest or New Year’s Day hangovers for the City Boys this year, as Chris Cornes’ side take on Highworth Town for their second game in three days, and second of four fixtures this week, against Highworth Town at Malvern’s HDAnywhere Community Stadium on Monday afternoon.
Following Saturday’s last-gasp 3-3 draw with Fairford Town, City will look to get back to winning ways and build on the 49 points gained from a possible 60 after the opening 20 games of their campaign. Leighton Blacker’s headed equaliser will have been a real gut punch for Chris’ side, but they can take strength from the incredible points tally gained so far and the momentum that it gives them heading into the business end of the season.
Saturday saw another solid performance from Cam Monteith in the centre of midfield for City. He was replaced late in the second half by new signing Jordan Lymn, and with Calvin Dinsley returning from suspension for today’s game, Manager Cornes now has plenty of options in that area of the pitch to choose from. Dinsley and Connor Gater have looked immovable in the middle of the park for City unless injuries or suspensions have caused rotation, and you would imagine Cornes will revert to type today.
Dylan Hart also continued his impressive run of three goals in his last three appearances on Saturday, with a well taken equaliser in the second half to make it 2-2. Dylan is now on 12 goals in all competitions this season and has been keeping Jamie Insall out of City’s number 9 position in recent weeks, but with the amount of games coming up we may see more rotation in that area of the pitch.
Another impressive display at the weekend came from Adam Mace. He assisted Hart’s equaliser but it could have been more from his fantastic deliveries and crossfield balls from left back, the skipper really leading by example.
Our opponents this New Year’s Day, Highworth Town, currently sit just outside the playoff places in the Hellenic Premier Division in 6th place, three points off Pershore Town in 5th but with three games in hand. Similarly to Fairford, City also travelled to Highworth in early December but came away with a 2-0 win and three points, and in the five matches since they have won three and lost two. Their wins include a 5-0 hammering of Worcester Raiders on Saturday, a match featuring five different goalscorers. They have also re-signed their former player Leon Morrison this week from North Leigh FC.
