City's Centurions breach 100 points with Pershore win

City's Centurions breach 100 points with Pershore win

Ryan Molloy30 Apr 2024 - 08:35

A Belmonte brace, plus goals from Evans and Hart, saw City win in final league game and reach 101 points for the campaign

Four second half City goals secured a 32nd league win of the season and saw City reach 101 points in this record-breaking, mammoth season, which saw jubilant scenes after the final whistle as players, coaching and backroom staff, and fans joined in the on-pitch celebrations at Pershore Town.

After a quiet first half where the hosts Pershore created as many good opportunities as City, it took until the second half for City to really get into their stride and secure the three points needed to pass the 100-mark. Cornes made four changes to his starting line-up from the 1-1 draw with Hereford Lads Club in midweek, with Kirk Layton replacing Chris Knight who had been removed at half-time after taking a knock at Claines Lane. Liam Lockett returned to the starting eleven in place of Taylor Townsend, and Cameron Monteith dropped to the bench with Calvin Dinsley returning in the deepest midfield role.

Jamie Insall, in what could be his last City but also career appearance before retirement, led the line from the start in place of Dylan Hart, and was also handed the captain's armband for the occasion on an emotional day.

City's first goal came early in the second half from this season's top goalscorer Belmonte. Kyle was well-positioned on the edge of the Pershore penalty area to receive a cut-back from Calvin Dinsley, and side-footed the ball into the back of the net to put the Champions in front.

Belmonte's second came within seconds of the restart and in comical fashion. From the kick off, Pershore played the ball round and as Belmonte closed down a Town man, he managed to get enough on a block from over 30 yards to loop over Reed-Jones and into the back of the net. City were two-up within a minute.

Pershore managed to halve the deficit with a smart finish from Dylan Parker, but substitute Kyonn Evans got City's third. Cutting in from the right flank towards the edge of the area, Evans powered a left-footed finish into the far corner for the goal of the day and his third of the season.

Dylan Hart grabbed City's fourth, his twenty-fourth of a hugely impressive season for City's frontman, before players and fans could celebrate the club's first title in 45 years after the final whistle.

With the league title and one cup already secured in the Wiseman, City now chase a Treble of Trophies from this season when they face Corsham Town in the Marsh Challenge Cup Final on Bank Holiday Monday, 6th May, a 4.15pm kick-off at Slimbridge, in what will be their final game of the campaign.
