Match Report by Lewis Howarth
438 supporters welcomed City back to league action at Claines Lane for the first time following the clubs record breaking and historic title winning season.
Despite this, it was Anstey Nomads who were on top in the opening quarter of the match, and after eight minutes City were punished with a deep cross towards the far post, resulting in Leo Brown heading home and opening the scoring for Anstey Nomads.
However, this goal triggered a response from City who began to grow into the game. City’s first major chance came after 18 minutes with a long ball from Logan Stoddart finding Zach Guinan, whose effort was saved by the keeper.
City began to create chances and after 28 minutes they got their reward. Liam Lockett showed that his blistering form last season is set to continue. Tidy link up with Guinan allowed him to fire a shot off from 20 yards out giving the keeper no chance and giving City their equaliser.
City remained in the drivers seat, and after 33 minutes took the lead. An Adam Mace in-swinging corner perfectly picked out Charlie Wise who headed home from the corner. A dream league debut for the new signing!
The momentum continued for Worcester, and in the 40th minute another debutant, Will Owens, fired a left footed rocket into the top corner on the edge of the box. This doubled City’s lead, giving them a comfortable advantage heading into the second half.
The second half started slowly with neither team creating many chances. The only notable chance in the opening stages came eight minutes in, Will Owens picking out Liam Lockett whose headed attempt was inches over the bar.
City remained firmly in control in the second half having the majority of possession and nullifying any potential attacking threats from Anstey Nomads. This dominance was rewarded and the game was put the bed in the 73rd minute. It was Mace and Wise linking up once more, with Charlie Wise netting his second goal of the game, a real dream debut for the new man who celebrated by the corner flag in front of The Faithful in attendance.
A perfect start to the season for City, and a day to remember for Charlie Wise as City look ahead to Walsall Wood in the FA Cup on Tuesday night.
