City repeated the opening day of the season twelve months ago by going down to a defeat at Newark.
Despite a very promising start, where City completely dominated the opening 25 minutes, the opening goal just could not come. City had an early appeal for a penalty turned down when Nat Kelly appeared to be held down in the box then Dave Reynolds & Sean Brain had near post shots saved.
Liam Lockett then went on a trademark dazzling run, setting up Sean Brain but his shot was parried away by keeper White then Dave Reynolds was unable to get a solid shot on goal from the rebound and the ball fell back into the arms of the keeper.
After that it was Newark who were in the ascendancy with City rarely troubling the home goal for the rest of the game. On 30 minutes, Newark took the lead. Westcarr's corner found the the head of Nathan Stainfield who made no mistake with a downward header inside the far post.
Five minutes later Newark had another chance but this time the header from Huthinson from Stainfield's free kick went inches wide of Dan Jezeph's post. They then had another chance, but King was unable to get on the end of Stainfield's cross & City managed to reach the break only one down.
The second half saw City's hopes dashed within two minutes of the re-start. Westcarr, who tormented City all afternoon was found easily in the box and he smashed the ball into the roof of the net.
City launched the ball long far too any times which were easily dealt with by the Newark back four. When they did play the ball on the ground looked completely different side, but chances were few and far between and Newark ran out deserved winners.
