Sheehan strike clinches well-deserved win

City completed a busy week of four fixtures by beating Paget Rangers 2-1 - a scoreline that perhaps didn't reflect the manner of the visitors' performance.

Continuing where they left off from Thursday evening's 5-0 friendly victory at Cheltenham Town, City laid siege to the Paget goal and created chance-after-chance from the whistle.

The first opportunity fell to Will Cottell, who was sent clear but foiled by a superb save by the home keeper. A good advantage by the referee then saw David Ferreira shoot across goal but just wide of the far post.

City were enjoying great success down the left with wing-back Sam Cotton a constant threat throughout the first quarter. He rampaged down the flank to pull back for Jamie Neath to hit the keeper before playing a lovely ball down the line for Jesse Asomugha to run onto but, after beating the Rangers defence, his effort was touched just wide for a corner.

Another galloping Cotton run and cross resulted in attempts by Asomugha and Jamie Hill being cleared inside the six yard box as the Rangers goal continued to lead a charmed life. The same two players then combined with Hill's byline pull-back resulting in another Asomugha shot being blocked as the first period somehow ended all-square.

After Alex Fenn headed narrowly over from a delicious Cian Sheehan cross at the start of Q2, City's pursuit of the match's opening goal saw them stretched on a couple of occasions as Paget threatened on the counter. But as the hosts tried to get a foothold in the game, the visitors finally took the lead that their play merited as Charlie Grubb latched onto an Asomugha flick to calmly stroke home.

George Hymas made a vital block as Q3 began but this warning sign wasn't heeded as, shortly afterwards, Paget levelled as a ball in from the left was tapped home from close range.

Fortunately City regained the initiative in the final quarter, which opened with Cotton and Hymas linking up well to give Neath a shooting opportunity that was saved.

Moments later, the fixture's decisive moment came when pressurising a home goal-kick, midfielder Sheehan pickpocketed the Paget defender and put away the winning goal to clinch a well-deserved win for his side as they closed out the contest without any further scares.
