City well beaten in opening fixture

City endured a 'bad day at the office' as they kicked off their JPL Cup campaign with a heavy home defeat to Cirencester Town Reds although the hosts can probably reflect on all of the goals conceded as being avoidable.

After an even first quarter that was goalless, a calamitous second period left City facing an uphill battle after the visitors found the net three times.

The Town defender turned his marker far too easily for the opening goal and the lead was quickly extended from the penalty spot following a trip inside the area. Before the quarter ended, City conceded again when the defence was caught out by a long ball over the top.

The home side were fortunate not to fall further behind at the start of Q3 when Will Sankey cleared off the line and keeper Josh Reed-Jones foiled the follow-up. And they were given a lifeline when Jesse Asomugha caught out a Cirencester defender out on his blindside to slot away his first goal of the season.

However any hopes of a comeback were quickly dashed as the visitors broke the City backline for a one-on-one chance that they converted.

Asomugha nearly pulled a goal back in the final quarter but his lob was clutched by the goalkeeper. At the other end, Reed-Jones pulled off an incredible double save but was powerless to prevent two further goals as Town's powerful striker continued to have a field day.

After two wins, a draw and a defeat from their preseason games, City will be hoping to put Saturday's blip behind them as they hit the road for three successive away fixtures.
